A recent survey by Deloitte Tax LLP shows that an increasing number of global companies are replacing traditional long-term expatriate engagements with short-term assignments for their employees. This growing number of short-term business travelers brings mounting complexity to managing the assignees–a situation that creates major tax and compliance challenges for companies around the world. The potential for noncompliance can unintentionally lead to penalties and conflicts with foreign tax authorities.
More than 75 percent of respondents to The Deloitte Tax Short-term Global Assignment Survey believe short-term business travelers are associated with a “High/Moderate” level of corporate and employee risk in areas such as immigration, payroll and corporate and individual tax compliance issues. The survey also shows that companies are beginning to pay greater attention to short-term assignments, with a majority of companies tracking their assignees.
