The Senate on June 8 failed to clear a procedural hurdle to proceed with a full debate on legislation that would permanently repeal the estate tax. The motion to debate was defeated 57-41, three votes shy of the 60 necessary to overcome a filibuster. Although the result was largely expected, the vote, which generally fell along party lines, nevertheless gave Republicans an election-year opportunity to showcase their support for estate tax repeal.
